Hello everyone!
My intentions for writing these articles are:
- Explain technical information about aerogels in simple terms (to the public)
- Store information and habits for my future self and others (in <7 minutes)

TL;DR Water Purifiers In Developed Countries 🚰
There’s a pushback in the research.
We were focused on how people would approach the filter… Until we were asked:
“How do big cities or small villages in developed countries filter their water? Is it a personal filter, or is it a large filtration plant? Perhaps the solution is already been made, just reapply it under the conditions of where you wanna start.”
This led me down a rabbit hole of exploring how the communities in the US filter their water… compared to small villages in Mexico.
The National Science Foundation put together a list of water filtration companies based in the US.
The list can be found here.
Three companies that were analyzed for water purification personalization are as follows:
- AOS Smith
- Amway Filters
- Ahlstrom Filters
AOS Smith water purifiers contain a two-stage drinking water replacement.
This filter can attach itself to the sink under the bathroom.
This purifier is a filter cartridge… aka residential filter.
Residential water filters are applicable for both point-of-entry and point-of-use devices, including whole-house filters, countertops, tap, pitchers, appliances, etc.
They remain in the household.
Amway Filters make personalized filters (containers & cartridges).
These filters can be attached directly via the kitchen sink or indirectly as a water pitcher (Brita Filter).
An advantage is that a signal notifies the owner when the water is unsafe for potable applications.
The primary signal is a red light followed by a beeping sound.
This filter is also a residential filter… it stays in the house.
Ahlstrom Filters has quality examples of personal & residential water filters.
Personal water filters are highly adaptable to small personal hydration devices such as water bottles and backpacks.
Examples Include:
Ahlstrom’s water filters can attach to a water bottle, container, or tube. The feature is in their adaptability.
Final Conclusions 💭
Many water filters are residential…
It includes filters like Ahlstrom, AOS Smith, etc.
But other filters are made for walking to water sources and drinking it there…
It could be a river, lake, pond, or public water tap (source)
Some examples include LifeStraw, Sawyer, & Aqus.
These filters target people who walk to find water.
The target customers confront a similar situation to the description of personal water filters:
They must walk to find their resources.
